A stand-alone Li-ion and Li-polymer switch-mode battery charger has been released by Texas Instruments with up to 94% efficiency. The bq24170/172 is a 1.6-MHz synchronous charger with two integrated N-channel powerMOSFETs. It is able to accurately regulate current, charge current and voltage due to the constant-frequency synchronousPWMcontroller. The temperature is closely monitored and provides battery detection, pre-conditioning, charge termination and charge status monitoring.

This battery charger is able to charge in three phases: preconditioning, constant current and constant voltage. It has a 4.5V-17V input operating range and an internal loop compensation which maintains a 120°C temperature. There are additional safety features as well.
