 When using power MOSFETs to switch either inductive or capacitive loads some form of protection is required to prevent theMOSFETdevice from becoming damaged. Driving an inductive load has the opposite effect from driving a capacitive load. For example, a capacitor without an electrical charge is a short circuit, resulting in a high "inrush" of current and when we remove the voltage from an inductive load we have a large reverse voltage build up as the magnetic field collapses, resulting in an induced back-emf in the windings of the inductor.This solid-state switch senses and interrupts an overcurrent condition . It allows the circuit to float. IC1 runs at 150 kHz and full-wave doubler D1/D2 provides 15V to the gate of Ql. An overcurrent sensed across Rl triggers Q3, removes gate bias from Ql, and opens the circuit formed by the full-wave bridge and Ql. CI and R3 allow the circuit to handle surges.
